Change Challenge Complete, October Sunshine, and CHIMM Night
And the winner is...
So many pennies were counted. PTO stands firm in its previously stated position* that the penny should be eliminated.
The 2024 Johnson Elementary Change Challenge is over. With your help, Johnson students raised $2,243.73 for the PTO! The grade that raised the most money is going to get an ice cream party and will also get to turn Principal Mickens into a human ice cream sundae at the next school wide morning meeting. And the winning grade…will be revealed Monday morning during morning announcements! What, did you think I was just going to tell you now, before your kids find out in the morning? Unless you are Ms. Irwin, who I happened to see on Saturday afternoon out in Crozet while we were enjoying some YOUTH SPORT, you’ll just have to wait to find out who won when your kids get out of school on Monday afternoon.
Thank you very much for all you contributed to this year’s effort. We raised a little bit more than last year, and according to my quick math, we actually outpaced inflation by about $49.60! So we raised more this year in both real and actual dollars, but good luck explaining to your kids the difference between “real” and “actual” dollars. Every dollar we raised will be funneled directly back into the school to support the teachers, staff, and administrators at Johnson in their mission to help our kids develop the skills and knowledge needed for lifelong learning. So, thanks!
*From last year:
In completely unrelated news, the Johnson Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization is throwing all of its considerable political muscle behind the effort to abolish the penny. Not that this is a frequent concern of most people, but do you have any idea how long it takes to count 10,000 pennies* by hand? In recent years, Canada, Finland, Australia, and New Zealand have all eliminated their pennies, and those countries are still doing just fine. Did you know that the “grassroots movement” to keep the penny in circulation is actually just a front group for BIG ZINC? Abolish the penny! And maybe the nickel while we’re at it!
*It was more like 11,500 pennies this year. ABOLOISH THE (sticky, filthy, oddly smelly) PENNY.
October Sunshine Committee
Laura Jordan is heading up this month’s October Sunshine project, with the hopes to shower the teachers and staff with so much pumpkin spice and cinnamon nice that they’ll be BEGGING for peppermint season. Please click the button below to sign up to bring in some autumnal teas, or some harvest-y baked goods, or some apple-y cider, or a nice fall-themed coffee creamer.
A brief aside: This is neither here nor there, but as I understand it, people out there are adding coffee creamer to their Dr. Peppers or Coca-Colas and whathaveyou, and calling it “Dirty Soda.” So, maybe we should re-brand this October Sunshine effort as an attempt to let the teachers have a bunch of DIRTY COFFEE, though that does not sound good to these old ears. Or maybe one of the teachers will take some Pumpkin Spice coffee creamer and add it to their apple cider, pour a can of Cherry Coke Zero into the whole thing, and go mega-viral on TikTok. Who knows! Click above to help make this happen.
CHIMM fundraiser night.
Last year, we raised a nice pile of cash by partnering with Chimm Thai restaurant for a Johnson spirit night, so we’re doing it again. Tuesday, October 22 will be Johnson night at Chimm in 5th Street Station. More details to come, but for now just consider making next Tuesday a Chimm night for dinner. You’ll be able to order for takeout or you can go to their place and dine in, and as long as you mention that you’re there in support of Johnson Elementary, we’ll get a percentage of your meal’s cost donated back to the PTO. Thanks so much to the fine folks at Chimm for doing this for us again this year.
Other Ongoing Business
Thanks as always! Talk to you soon.
